diy whimsy spider

supplies needed to make whimsy spider

I knew I wanted to make some sort of “whimsy” spider for my Halloween decor this year. Don’t get me wrong… I’m not a fan of REAL spiders at all- but when they’re cute and whimsy like this one, I’m all about them!

This project took a few more steps than most do- but don’t let that scare you. It’s still SUPER easy to put together, and you’ll be so thankful that you did it!

  • magnets for eyes
  • black and white piping
  • googly eyes used for spider eyes
  • popsicle sticks used for legs

Here’s what you’ll need…

  • wooden circle (mine came from Dollar Tree)
  • black pipe cleaners
  • popsicle sticks
  • google eyes
  • round magnets
  • hot glue gun
  • ribbon of your choice
  • wooden sign from Dollar General
  • black and white paint
base for our spider is from dollar tree

The very first thing to do- paint our signs! I’m painting both signs black… because you can’t have Halloween OR Spiders without the color black!

The round sign is for our spider, of course… and the other is what we will be putting our spider on!

paint your dollar general board black

Here is my Dollar General pallet sign after I painted it black! I also went back in and painted the back boards black as well.

wrap the black and white piping around the wooden base

Next up, finish the edges of the spider! I had this black and white piping that worked perfect for this… but you could use any ribbon you have!

paint the magnets white

Time for his eyes! I just used little circular magnets… and painted them white! We’ll add the googly-eyes later.

break popsicle sticks to shape of spider legs

This is the part that takes the longest… but it’s not hard at all! Basically, just break your popsicle stick in pieces, and form it into the shape of a leg!

Like this! Now make 8 of them…LOL!

wrap pipe cleaners around the popsicle stick legs

Now, to make them actually look like legs… just wrap around enough black pipe cleaners to cover the whole thing!

Don’t they look like little spider legs already?!?!

attaching legs onto the spider

Time to attach them! Just hot glue them to the back of the spider.

How precious is this little guy?!?! I went ahead and added the googly-eyes, and made a sweet little bow… that I later decided to remove the bow, and make a different one. LOL

finished look of the spider

Here is the FINISHED look!!!! I added the white polka dots, the little white smile, and the white raffia bow!

I’m not sure about you… but this spider is my definition of CUTE, not creepy!!! I just love him so much.

What do YOU think about him?? Would you make him for your own home??? I wanna know!

Be sure to check out some other Halloween posts I have on the blog… if you enjoyed this one, you’ll for sure LOVE these!
