take the first step

There are seasons in life when we find ourselves waiting—waiting for God to provide, to open a door, to change a situation that feels stuck. As women, especially in hard seasons, it’s easy to whisper, “God, I’m trusting You… but when are You going to move?”

But what if, sometimes, God is waiting on us?

The story of Ruth gives us a beautiful and practical picture of this truth. Ruth was a widow, living in a foreign land, with no clear future and no guaranteed provision. By all accounts, she had every reason to sit still in fear or uncertainty.

Instead, she took a step.

Ruth said to Naomi,
“Let me go out into the harvest fields to pick up the stalks of grain left behind by anyone who is kind enough to let me do it.”  Ruth 2:2

Notice this—Ruth didn’t know whose field she would end up in. She didn’t have a plan beyond obedience and willingness. She simply got up and went.

And then Scripture says something powerful:
“Naomi replied, ‘All right, my daughter, go ahead.’  So Ruth went out to gather grain behind the harvesters.  And as it happened she found herself working in a field that belonged to Boaz, the relative of her father-in-law, Elimelech.”  Ruth 2:2-3

“And as it happened.” What looks like coincidence was actually divine orchestration.

When Ruth stepped out in faith, God stepped in with provision.

Boaz didn’t just allow her to gather scraps—he instructed his workers to leave extra grain for her. He protected her. He showed her kindness. What she expected to be just enough became more than enough.

That’s how God works.

But Ruth had to move first.

How often do we wait for clarity before we act? We tell ourselves, “When God shows me exactly what to do, then I’ll step out.” But many times, God reveals His provision in the process, not before it.

Your “field” might look like:

  • Making the phone call
  • Starting the application
  • Setting a boundary
  • Showing up even when it’s hard
  • Taking a small, imperfect step forward

You may not know the outcome. Ruth didn’t either.

But God honors faith in motion.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5–6)

God didn’t just meet Ruth’s needs—He exceeded them. Through Boaz, Ruth’s story became part of something far greater than she could have imagined. She became part of the lineage of Jesus.

All because she chose to step into the field.

Are you waiting and wondering if God is asking you to move?  You don’t have to have it all figured out.  You don’t have to have all the guarantees.  You just have to take the next faithful step of obedience.  Because sometimes, your breakthrough isn’t in the waiting…it’s in the first step.
