how to create whimsy American flag decor from an antique door

I’ve had this antique door stashed away in my craft room for quite some time now, just waiting for it’s debut. TODAY was finally the day! Come along with me as we transform it into an AMERICAN FLAG to display for Memorial Day/Fourth of July!!

Disclaimer: this is a whimsy version of the American flag, so this painting will not have 13 stripes and 50 stars.

what you’ll need…

  • Antique wood door (any piece of wood would work!)
  • Package of mini wood stars from Dollar General
  • Wood spindle sticks (I purchased mine from a friend who was selling some of her craft supplies)
  • Re-Fabbed Branded Scissors
  • Re-Fabbed Hot Glue Gun/Hot Glue
  • A Frayed Knot paint in the following colors: Tahoe, Cotton & Firehouse
  • Re-Fabbed Paint Brushes (coming back in stock soon!)
  • Chip brush
  • White pom pom ribbon
  • Navy ric rac ribbon
  • Blue & white polka dotted ribbon

First, I removed the door handle and wiped down the door well.

I decided to lay out a “rough draft” to see how many stars and spindles I would need to paint to complete my project!

I used this chip brush and began to paint a very thin layer of Cotton by A Frayed Knot Paint all over the antique door.

While my door was drying, I painted the front and side of my stars the color Tahoe by A Frayed Knot Paint!

I painted my spindles the color Firehouse by A Frayed Knot Paint. These turned out to be the perfect colors for this Americana diy!

I ended up using 21 spindles and 16 stars for my sign, but this will vary based on how large the spindles and sign you are using and personal preference!

Once my paint dried and I hot glued the stars and spindles on using my FAVE hot glue gun! Here is how she’s looking!!!

It was a little plain for my taste, so I went through my ribbon stash and pulled out some goodies!! I couldn’t help myself!

I cut the pom pom ribbon and hot glued in between the spindles using my hot glue gun.

I added the navy ric rac ribbon around the edges of the stars in the top right corner!

And lastly, I decided to hot glue my blue and white polka dotted ribbon in between my rows of stars.

Here she is, in all her glory! I’m LOVING all of the Americana projects lately, and this one is no exception!!!

I thought it was just perfect beside my blue and white vases on my MANTEL! Would you have added the ribbon, or left as is??? Either way, I would LOVE to see if this project inspired you in any way!

We actually used these mini wooden stars from Dollar General in my most recent craft in my MVP group (picture of the frame we made below), and I still had plenty left over to use! Are you interested in joining us?! You’ll get immediate access to:
