paper mache houses from hobby lobby

This might be the most FUN I’ve had making something in a while!! This DIY Haunted House is so easy to make your own- and to let your creativity loose!

I found this pack of THREE paper mache houses at Hobby Lobby for $14.99 (with 50% off, of course).

For about $7.50, you can make THREE different houses for THREE different seasons, if you wanted. I chose to make the smallest house a haunted house, but the others I’m using for CHRISTMAS!!!

I’m planning on decorating one to be a gingerbread house… so stay tuned for that! But anyways… let’s get into what you’re here for today- which is the SPOOKY HAUNTED HOUSE!

Here’s what you’ll need…

  • Paper Mache Houses
  • Black Paint
  • Mod Podge
  • Halloween scrapbook paper
  • Halloween embellishments (ribbon, googly-eyes, whatever you want)
  • Hot Glue Gun
cut scrapbook paper to fit inside of house

The very first thing I did, was take some halloween scrapbook paper, and mod podged it to the inside of the house. I thought working from the inside out might be the easiest way to go!

paint the inside of the house black

After that’s done, take your black paint, and completely paint the inside!

Again, this is TOTALLY customizable- so feel free to choose whatever color you want!!!

don't forget to paint the roof black

Once the inside was dry, I started working on the outside! Go ahead and paint the whole thing black, just so we have a good “spooky” base to work from!

hot glue bones outside of the windows to mimic shutters

Here comes the fun part… letting your creativity get the best of you!!

Since this is a “haunted house,” I used different odd and end Halloween embellishments that I had in my stash… these bones being one of them! They came from Dollar Tree.

mod podge scrapbook paper onto the sides of the roof

I thought the bones would be good “shutters” for our house!

Then, I mod podged the same design of scrapbook paper from the inside onto the roof. I made sure to tear my paper to give it a more rugged look!

add embellishments! I added google eyes, and ribbon

This might be my favorite embellishment- the googly-eyes!!!

I also added a strip of orange and black ribbon to bring out some of that orange to the front!

I had a pack of berry picks from Dollar Tree, so I hot glued one onto the outside like a “tree”!

I also lined the bottom of my house with black and white cord from Hobby Lobby.

To finish it off, I took a skull from Dollar Tree, painted it white, and hot glued it to the top of the house!

I thought the roof needed a bit more color… so, I ripped up more scrapbook paper, and simply mod podged it on!

If this isn’t one spooky haunted house, then I don’t know what is!

The creativity of this craft is what I love most about it. Everyone could make there’s totally different, and still come out with an adorable project!

If you decide to make this one, make sure you have FUN with it!
