Have you ever had situations happen in your life that leave you bumfuzzled? Maybe you are having a hard day and someone you haven’t spoken to in weeks sends you a text that says they are praying for you, as God had laid you on their heart. Maybe you are driving down the road and are frustrated because you are behind a tractor, but as you continue on your way, you see a wreck up the road that you could have been involved in had you been going faster. Maybe you are frustrated because your yard needs to be cut yet again, and you don’t have the time, but you come home and a neighbor has graciously mowed it for you.
Some people would say that all of this is just a coincidence. But for those of us who have our faith in God, we know that God is a God of details and He can orchestrate some amazing things. It’s overwhelming when you think back to times in your life when things just came together and then you realize that the God of the universe was working with intricate detail to love you. God has been working in the details since the world began. Creation was full of specific details. Many of the stories of faith carry details that only God could have created: Jonah and the whale. Joseph and his journey through slavery to the palace. All the prophecies fulfilled from the Old Testament throughout Christ’s life and sacrifice.
Another example of God being in the details is found in the book of Ruth. Ruth is the daughter-in-law of Naomi. Naomi has decided to travel back to her home country after the death of her husband. Ruth chooses to go with her even though that is not required as a daughter-in-law. Once they get to the homeland, Ruth tells Naomi that she is going to go out into the field to pick up some grain. As widows, they would be dependent upon the generosity of others.
“One day Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, ‘Let me go out into the harvest fields to pick up the stalks of grain left behind by anyone who is kind enough to let me do it.’ Naomi replied, ‘All right, my daughter, go ahead.’ So Ruth went out to gather grain behind the harvesters. And as it happened, she found herself working in a field that belonged to Boaz, the relative of her father-in-law, Elimelech.’” Ruth 2:2-3
Ruth may have thought she had just picked a random field, but God ordained the field that she would glean. She had picked the field that belonged to a relative of her father-in-law. The relative that could be her kinsman redeemer and change the trajectory of her and Naomi’s lives. Ruth probably did not recognize the significance of the decision she made that day. God is working in our ordinary, daily tasks. The question is, “will we be aware of His goodness and guidance when our eyes are opened to His provision?”
We need to be more reflective in our daily lives and look for the ways that He is working and providing. Help us to not overlook the ways that He provides every step of the journey and how those “coincidences” that occur are really the divine intervention of a personal God.
