magic of Christmas lights

I am a sucker for some good Christmas lights.  It just never gets old for me to see the beauty of these lights every year around Christmas time.  My love for lights goes way back.  Even when I was a kid we always went to a few places in Paducah.  There was one gentleman named Doc Hicks who decked his house and entire yard out with figures and thousands of lights.  He just did this on his own and it became a local attraction.

As a mom with my own kids, I have sought out other amazing light displays including the local parks around our surrounding cities.  We have been blessed to see the lights at Disney at Christmas and some amazing attractions that coordinate their lights with musical selections.  Most recently we have created more magic by theming our light night, “PJs and pups” where we all wear Christmas pajamas and take our dogs with us.

I’ve tried to pin down what it is that makes me enjoy the lights so much and I think it is just the beauty that shines from the darkness.  I can remember driving to Doc Hicks on this old country road and then out of nowhere the entire world seems lit up with the light of Christmas.  You just can’t take your eyes off the light.  The darkness is no longer part of the story.

In John, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.  If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”  John 8:12

Jesus was the light of the world.  He is the one person who can immediately change the atmosphere from darkness to light.  When Jesus entered into a situation, it changed.  Before Christ was born it was prophesied that Jesus would bring light to the world.

“The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”  John 1:5

The darkness and evil of this world can never extinguish, and will never overcome, God’s light.  Jesus is the light and He brings light to all mankind.

For those of us who have Christ living inside we are called to be the light of the world.  “You are the light of the world–like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.  No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket.  Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”  Matthew 5:14-16

We are called to be the Christmas lights of the season.  We are called to brighten someone’s day.  We are called to change the environment with our kindness, love, joy, and peace.  We are called to live differently so that others can see Christ living inside of us. So, take time this holiday season to really be the light in everything you do!
