how to turn a birthday card into home decor

Birthday cards… You don’t want to toss them but you also don’t feel great about throwing them into a box to collect dust over the next decade. Am I right? Come along with me as I show you how I transformed this adorable little birthday card into fun piece of decor for my home!

what you’ll need…

*tap on the bolded items to shop my affiliate links!*

  • birthday/seasonal card of choice (I grabbed mine at my local TJ Maxx for $2)
  • 5×7 matted picture frame (this frame is from Hobby Lobby, but I bought it from a friend for $2)
  • my FAVORITE scissors
  • whimsy workshop scrapbook paper

First, I cut the back of my birthday card off – using my favorite scissors, of course!

Next, I cut the “wishing you a very happy birthday” wording off of my card so it could be used in my every day decor! Feel free to leave this part if you would like to use it as decor for a birthday party, for a holiday, etc! I also decided to cut down the white sides of the card so it would be symmetrical.

Here is now she is looking… now to choose scrapbook paper for my frame!

I chose a green striped paper from my whimsy workshop scrapbook paper!

I am keeping the mat inside the picture frame, so the scrapbook paper only needs to be cut down small enough to fit into the frame… it doesn’t have to be perfect!

Like I said above, I am keeping the 4×7 white mat inside my picture frame. If you don’t have a mat, you can purchase a set from Amazon HERE!

I placed the birthday card first, and the scrapbook paper directly behind. I did not use any kind of adhesive everything stayed in place just fine after I tightened the back of my frame well. However, you may want to add glue dots or tape to your card and/or scrapbook paper.

Such a FUN little, colorful piece of decor! This may go down as one of my EASIEST diy’s on the blog!

Who would’ve thought this was a birthday card?!? Not to mention, it matches this hot pink frame perfectly!

With only 4 supplies and $4, you can’t beat it!!! I love it SO MUCH!

I totally love this. I got your favorite scissors last week and I can honestly say they are the best scissors I have ever used. I keep them locked in my desk drawer so no one else will use and misplace them. If anyone has been thinking of buying them, do it! You will be glad you did.

I love this! I have the last card my mom gave me before she passed in July of 2022. I think I need to get creative. Thanks for the idea.
