how to make a diy halloween cat pillow

Seasonal decorative pillows are so fun, but can be VERY expensive! Because I never tend to decorate my home the same for each holiday, I don’t like to invest too much money in holiday specific decor…especially pillows! Dollar Tree has the cutest little felt cat in their Halloween section, and I thought it would be fun to create a pillow! This was super simple project and required very few supplies!

For this pillow project, I used the following supplies:

  • Felt cat craft kit – Dollar Tree
  • Small pillow or solid pillow cover
  • Black and pink ribbon
  • Arlene’s Tacky Glue
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors

For my pillow, I used this pillow from Hobby Lobby that was purchased on clearance a while back. The front of it says “Love,” but the black piping was perfect, so I just used the back of the pillow. If you do not have a pillow on hand to use, several retailers sell solid pillow covers that can be used over your existing pillows.

For this particular project, I ended up only using the black cat from the little kit. I originally thought I might use the eyes and a little pom for the nose, but I actually liked the simplicity of just the silhouette.

First, I applied an all-purpose tacky glue on the back of the cat. I used a toothpick and kind of spread it around a bit.

After pressing it down on the pillow, some of the edges raised slightly where the pillow curved. I knew this would happen, so I had my glue gun handy to glue down the edges. Even if you are using a pillow cover and it’s flat, you will want to use a hot glue around the edges if you didn’t apply the all-purpose glue right up to the edge.

I simply applied the hot glue right near the edge and pressed down firmly on the pillow. Make sure you hold it several seconds so it will adhere well.

Next, I took a little ribbon and created a bow and a collar. Any bow you like will work for this step. You can even just glue down a pretty button if you don’t want a bow. Adding something to the collar just adds some extra dimension!

This cute pillow was SO EASY and was quick to whip up in about 15 minutes! I really love how creative you can get with this cat! You can assemble the cat as it was intended for the project, or you can do like I did and just add your own touch. You can add as much or as little detail as you like!

Make it YOUR OWN! Do you think you will try this? I hope you share with me if you do!

PIN this project for later!

How stinking cute is this! I love it! The ribbon for a cat collar really added to this project.
