Very rarely in our culture do you hear of anyone thinking they have enough. You see it with money, possessions, status, social media “likes,” and in many other ways. People can’t seem to get enough of anything. To have enough means that you have a certain quantity, quality, and scope of something that fully meets your demands, needs, or expectations. It seems that people are constantly striving for more and are never truly satisfied with enough.
In the Old Testament we find a story of a widow. God had told the prophet Elijah to head to a certain village and there he would find a widow who would feed him. So, Elijah traveled there and found a widow. When he met her, he asked her to bring him a cup of water and also a bite to eat.
“But she said, ‘I swear by the Lord your God that I don’t have a single piece of bread in the house. And I have only a handful of flour left in the jar and a little cooking oil in the bottom of the jug. I was just gathering a few sticks to cook this last meal, and then my son and I will die.’ But Elijah said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid! Go ahead and do just what you’ve said, but make a little bread for me first. Then use what’s left to prepare a meal for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: There will always be flour and olive oil left in your containers until the time when the Lord sends rain and the crops grow again.’ So she did as Elijah said, and she and Elijah and her family continued to eat for many days. There was always enough flour and olive oil left in the containers, just as the Lord had promised through Elijah.” 1 Kings 17:12-16
This widow did not have enough. She was down to her last bit of flour and was prepared to make the final meal for herself and her son. But this widow completely obeyed God through the words of Elijah even though she didn’t have enough resources to really do what he was asking. She trusted that God would keep His promise and would provide. The Israelites faced the same thing when God provided them manna daily in the wilderness. Here, every day the widow used her resources and every day when she came back to her jug she had enough for one more day.
God is our daily provider. He wants to know that we trust Him to be enough. He wants us to depend on Him every single day. He wants us to show our obedience consistently. He wants us to open our hearts to follow His commands and have the faith that He will come through with enough every single time. Only God can provide all that we need and only He can give us enough.
