diy painted valentine heart with black and white stripes

Sometimes you have a specific space that you know needs a very specific thing, and instead of buying that…it can be sooo much more satisfying to MAKE IT! This valentine heart that I painted is just that!

It goes PERFECTLY with my coffee bar that I will be sharing with you tomorrow, and I am just in love with how it turned out.

It is simple, y’all…but many times, simple is better! Am I right?

Here is what I used:
Apple Barrel Paint in Flag Red, Jet Black and Snow White
Tulip paint in White
Paint Brush
Any flat surface

I had this set of cauldrons and witches hats that I had gotten from Dollar Tree Plus left over from Halloween, so I decided to take the wooden piece and turn it around to have a flat surface to paint on. I saved the cut outs for another project another day…maybe LOL

I started by painting the entire piece of wood white. I painted the sides white also (no pic, but y’all know how to paint a solid surface HA).

This is what the piece of wood looked like before I painted it white:

After making sure the entire wood was covered completely and you could not see any wood, I started painting my black stripes. *The size of the paintbrush depends on the size of the stripes you want* I wanted thick, whimsy (aka NON PERFECT) stripes, so I used a rather thick paintbrush to paint them on!

Once all of the paint had dried, I took my smaller paintbrush and painted a heart. I wanted it longer on one side than the other, and I wanted it to be kinda “skinny”, if that makes sense?!

I then proceeded to fill in the heart with my red paint. I will say this, it is HARDER to cover black with red, which I did know ahead of time…but…it was a pain. I SHOULD HAVE used textured paint in red, so that it was thicker and covered better. Next time, I will do that!

It took several coats of red!

Once every bit of paint had completely dried, I went in with my tulip paint and made the skinny lines and highlights. This made ALLLLL the difference, y’all! SERIOUSLY! How amazing did that turn out??

I love how it adds a 3-D looking effect to the whole painting! Absolutely stunning, y’all!!!

Be sure to PIN FOR LATER!

Hey girl, just a quick tip that I found… you could have painted your heart with a light gray then with your red . Better coverage and not as many coats of red so less time. But I am loving your so much I might have to try this!
