diy dollar tree valentine kitchen decor

You can typically find cute Valentine’s Day tea towels for the kitchen, but you don’t often see specific Valentine’s Day kitchen décor. While at the Dollar Tree recently, I saw the cutest heart trio tabletop piece and it was a perfect blank slate for a project! I wasn’t sure what to make with it, but I grabbed it anyway. THEN, I spotted a set of Valentine cookie cutters and a lightbulb went off in my head!

For this project, I started with the following:

– Wooden heart trio tabletop piece – Dollar Tree Plus section
– Cookie cutter set – Dollar Tree
– Red rubber spatula – Dollar Tree
– Bamboo spoon – Dollar Tree
– Acrylic paint in pink and red
– Paintbrushes
– Pencil
– Hot glue gun

I originally thought about painting the hearts completely, but I actually really liked the base color and texture. My plan was to put one cookie cutter on each heart, and I wanted to paint inside the base wood inside each cookie cutter.

First, I traced each cookie cutter onto the hearts.

Then, I painted the “I” and “U” with Apple Barrel’s Cameo Pink, and I painted the heart red. I just used some red paint I had on hand.

While the paint was drying, I worked on the rubber spatula and spoon. The spoon had a rubber handle, so I just cut that off so the handles would match.

I wanted to cross the utensils and prop them up behind the hearts, so I glued the utensils together creating an “X.” To make this step easier, I crossed them to the height I needed and marked on the handle with a pencil. Now I had a guideline for gluing them together.

I glued them together with a hot glue gun and set them aside. Next, I was ready to glue on the cookie cutters. The cookie cutters are very light weight, so they only needed to be glued in a couple of places to stay in place. I applied a thin line of hot glue directly on the painted letters, then pressed the cookie cutters into the glue.

Now I was ready to glue the utensils to the back. I applied hot glue to the back of the rubber spatula and pressed onto the back of the heart. I held it there several seconds to make sure it did not pull away.

I absolutely LOVE this easy, finished product! I think it’s so cute and perfect to add into a kitchen for a
sprinkle of Valentine’s Day love!
