You probably don’t have to think too far back into childhood memories to recall some times and things that brought you delight. Delight means to take deep joy, pleasure, or satisfaction in it. It’s deeper than just liking or enjoying something, but rather having a heart response where there is genuine happiness and fulfillment.
For me, I can think back to my childhood and find delight when I would go and visit my grandparents. Both sets brought happiness and joy when I would visit. I can remember how I felt when I was there and the sense of wholeness. There were specific things that I remember; sweet tea, back rubs, crafting, and dill pickles, but the overall delight was just in being there. Even now in typing this I can find myself going back in time over almost 30 years ago and I can still get that sense of happiness and fulfillment.
In the book of Psalms, the author states that we should delight in the law of the Lord.
“Oh the joy of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.” Psalm 1:1-3
When was the last time I truly found delight in the Word? Do I open to read the Word and find genuine happiness and fulfillment or is it just another task to do for the day? When was the last time that I was captivated by God? That I relished in the time that I spent with Him and was so captivated by it that I meditated on it?
We should find our delight in God and His Word. Our deepest joy, satisfaction, and pleasure should be found in our relationship with who God is. It is about loving God above all else–desiring Him, His presence, and His Word. We should cherish our relationship with Him above all else. The psalmist states that the more we delight in God’s law, the more fruitful we will be. And it is a cycle as the more fruitful we are, the more we want to spend time and delight in God.
Where is our delight currently found? Where are we trying to find genuine happiness and fulfillment? If we are looking anywhere besides our relationship with God and spending time in His Word we will be left ultimately dissatisfied. Let us build a relationship with God that is more focused on delight. Let us long for time with Him and His Word. Let us leave our time with God consumed by our happiness and captivated by His love.
