You wake up. You go through the same process every day, whatever those detailed steps might be. You grab your things and head out the door. You go to work and do the same things every day. Work is over and you head home to finish your night, and do the same routine tomorrow. If you aren’t careful, your life can become complacent. You become self-satisfied to a fault. You start to do the bare minimum because you are comfortable. You start to neglect things because you are used to life as it is. And many times, we stay complacent even though we know there are things we desperately need to change or improve on.
In the book of Proverbs the author states, “Fools are destroyed by their own complacency.” Proverbs 1:32b
Complacency can sneak up in all areas of our lives: in our physical health, in our work, in our relationships with others, and even in our spiritual faith. Oh, how easy it is to become numbed to complacency. In our spiritual lives we can go through the motions so many times that our faith becomes routine and we become self-satisfied even in our relationship with Christ. We can become unaware of the areas that need improvement, need repentance, need refreshing, and we just continue on in our spiritual numbness. The author states that only fools are destroyed by complacency.
God doesn’t want our complacency. In the book of Revelation, John is writing to seven different churches. He writes a letter to the church of Laodicea and states, “I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other. But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!” Revelation 3:15-16
This church had become spiritually complacent and self-sufficient. Jesus rebuked them for their complacency. He would rather us be all in or all out, than lukewarm. Lukewarm water seems numbing and stagnant. Honestly, to put it in simple terms, it’s just “blah.” Where have you become complacent in your life and need a refresher? Ask God to reveal the areas that need to be shaken up and revived, whether that be spiritually, physically, relationally, or in some other capacity. Living complacent becomes numbing. Ask God for a freshness in your life.
